Since the outbreak of Covid, video conferencing has gained in popularity. While employees were working from home, companies had to find alternative ways to operate in order to keep businesses alive. With employees working from their living rooms, bedrooms or home offices business had to rely on video conferences to keep the morale high in these difficult times. So, what is video conferencing? How does it work?

Video conferencing can be defined as a meeting of two or more participants using video and audio to communicate while located in separate locations. This can be achieved by using phones, laptops, or desktop computers. Furthermore, video conferencing can be used for several purposes. For instance, Webinars, Interviews, Team meetings, and more.

Internet Connection: A strong internet connection capable of delivering high speeds is crucial for a successful and stress-free video conference. Weak internet connection will lead to audio and video break-up. As a result, participants will not be able to understand what you’re saying or have a clear view from your camera.

Camera: To transmit video from your end to other participants you will need a camera. Most laptops and phones have a built-in camera which will work with all types of video conferencing software. Desktop PC’s will likely require a standalone camera to be connected. After the camera has been installed, it’ll work with all video conferencing software.

Audio: Lastly, Audio is undoubtedly the most important element of any type of call. Other participants must be able to hear you, and in return you must be able to hear them. You will need to ensure the speakers on your device work. In addition, you will need a microphone. Most laptops and phones have built-in microphones; however, you may find the quality to be poor. Standalone microphones will deliver a better sound quality.

Zoom: Initially released in 2011, zoom increased in popularity during Covid-19.  The free version of zoom allows 100 users to meet for a limited 40 minutes. With various paid plans available, zoom can support up to 1,000 users for meetings lasting up to 30 hours.

Skype: First released in 2003, this software was once the go to video conferencing software. Skype a group chat option that can support up to 50 users for an unlimited amount of time. This software is available on all operating systems Mac & Windows.

Microsoft teams: Probably the most popular video conferencing software for businesses. Teams is what most companies use to stay connected. The software was developed by Microsoft, it gained much interest due to its user-friendly layout. In addition, it offers video conferencing, instant chat, file storage, and much more.
